Clare Matterson CBE is the Director of Engagement at The Natural History Museum London. Former Director of Strategy at Wellcome Trust, she led on strategy, policy, advocacy and education, communicating the work of the Trust, leading grant management and incubating new initiatives. She also served as the interim CEO at EAT, a science-based global organisation focused on healthy and sustainable food during 2017/18.
Clare received a CBE in recognition of her services to public engagement with Science. From 2004 to 2014, Clare was Director of Culture & Society at the Wellcome Trust. With a small team, she conceived and led the first 10 years of Wellcome Collection - the Trust's highly acclaimed public venue. She was responsible for bringing the arts and humanities into the core of the Trust's work and for extending its activities to engage the public with science. Passionate about education, Clare led the Wellcome Trust's initiative to create the National Science Learning Centre – a partnership with the UK Government to drive improvement in science education. She is currently a Trustee at the Horniman Museum and Chair of FlipSide, an East Anglia arts-based charity.
